So a long time ago in San Mateo, California , there lived a mommy who when she was 16 weeks prego desiring a natural birth went for her first ultrasound . The nice midwife was a bit scared so she sent the mommy to high risk .The beautiful young doctor at Lucille Packard children's hospital could not get a good view of the kiddo , so the young resident she was went and got a grown up doctor. A few minutes later she smiles and says you are having twins. Terror struck my body , two babies , not one but two babies which was quickly followed by a joy that can never be described like when know you are in for hard work but , worth it work. So the young doctor warned the young mommy that she was overweight and that this pregnancy would be no easy road to walk. The path would be a bit tattered ! We had no idea if they were identical or fraternal.
20 weeks ........ hell begins ...... My blood pressure started to rise to dangerous levels and the young doctor would talk to me about viability at 23-24 weeks. It was really serious and surreal at the same time. I was 28 years old and 15 or so weeks of bed rest was not what I imagined. I dreamed of shopping for strollers , beautiful vintage clothes, Winnie the Pooh and so much more ...... The idea of laying i bed was not so much on my mind. I was sent home with strict bed rest no work JUST BED ! I was a freelance writer so I could lay in bed and write I was lucky. I tried to remain calm and carry on ! I could feel the little guys kicking around.
24 weeks.............. Viability not a big comfort because now if they were born so very soon they may have serious complications. This of course made my blood pressure go up and at 25 weeks I discovered that I had gestational diabetes. Whew so much ! Well so then it was once a week ultrasounds and dopplers and little stress tests with buzzers to wake my poor babies ! I was seeing three neo-natal specialists and of course the young doctor. I would leave with such stress and I am not even going to mention what was going on at home with the daddy.
26 ............. weeks two days a week doctor visits begin and the babies really start to move around , have wrestling matches in my womb. The womb mates as I started to call them ! They moved constantly and it seemed like baby A was much more active than the larger baby B. I had gained forty pounds and could hardly sleep at all. The babies moved constantly.
28............... weeks Still no relief in sight I was allowed to get out of bed and walk my young doctor wanted a vaginal birth as a c section was a huge risk and I had already had one c section so this would VBAC , vaginal birth after c section. So I walked around Golden Gate park , enjoyed shopping a bit in the Marina District and started to get things ready around the house. I had so many clothes and I was loving going to parks and watching other kiddos.
29................. weeks blood pressure still high I was placed on meds and strict diet . My mom came to visit from Alabama this week and since she could not hang around she bought me a Peg double stroller and a Maclaren umbrella double for later. We had a great time shopping for clothes at a cute boutique called Baby Style which sadly is out of business now :( Life was Bliss.
30............... weeks getting huge now I mean really huge I remember I was addicted to Starbucks Chai and would often go for rides over the Golden Gate bridge. I was just relaxing and reflecting on what was to come in hopefully another ten weeks.
32................weeks doctor visits are up to three times a week and the babies seemed to be doing pretty good !
33...................weeks back on bed rest the young doctor felt like we so close why not try to get to 38 or 39 weeks a miracle for my health status but hey miracles do happen right.
35 and a half weeks................ On a stress test baby B was showing no signs of life , his heart was not beating on the ultrasound quick action ahead !

Double Mint Pregnancy ! Birth Story to follow

The little second your alive !
I believe as we get older I am 36 by the way that we start to pay close attention to the little things in life and begin to put significant value on small joys. This Summer with my daughter has been priceless , I miss the boys something fierce but this time is so sweet. It is the upside to having a large family with divorce involved. I know you are all thinking wow is there such as thing as an upside to divorce. Well yes everyone is happier with the status quo ! I wish I could have made it up with the boy's father , but it just could not. If it did I may never taste the sweet joy of having my sweet girl around to make me laugh and to entertain me daily with silly antics. So in the journey of life we must strive to find joy in sorrow and smile through the tears. This is my motto and I am mighty happy today ! I added this darling picture from last Spring Break while it has nothing to do with my post today it honors my boys !
Lots of Joy and Happiness to you all ! If you are mommies missing your babies or daddies whatever your sorrow smile through the tears.

Birthday Cards :) Made by us
We spent the morning making these sweet Cards for the twins ........ I hope that when they open them at their father's house that they remember sitting around drawing pictures at home. I looked for birthday cards that I thought would interest them an no luck So I tried my best to draw their favorites Batman and Lego Vader.
This little bucket with a couple of dollar store mermaids is just the sweetest thing I most certainly do not have the heart to make her pour out their ocean. She believes with all her heart that they will die if they are left out of the water . She has never seen The Little Mermaid and we are keeping it that way :)

Smurfy Movie Review
So we took our little darlin to see the Smurfs , of course the way I prepared her for the event was by allowing her to watch You Tube clips of my Saturday morning nostalgia all week. I knew that Yassine was into the Smurfs I mean they had Smurfs in Morocco and translated into Arabic and French but I had no idea that he was such a fan. I think it is one of the moments in our almost 8 year relationship that we were truly in tune with each other's laughter. The heroine in the Smurfs was a pregnant Etsy collector and painter named Grace married to a top VP of marketing for a major player in the New York fashion world. I wore my I love NY tee shirt as if I knew it would be perfect for the film and low and behold it was perfect. So the Smurfs added so much to the lives of Grace and her Husband and the part so of the movie where they are covered up with vintage pot holders like sleeping bags is a Etsy girl's dream , not to mention the vintage style Nursery that the Smurfs designed for the new addition to the family. There was a laugh for everyone in this film ! Smurfette finally changes her dress , the normal villain and his cat were around it was just all around fun . Norah enjoyed the movie , but not as much as her parents who fed each other popcorn and really enjoyed each other's company.
On a sour note I did not talk to the twins today , they are likely busy with Ramadan :( I did get a sweet email from them telling me what they wanted when they return home :) Have a bliss night all.

http://beta.news.yahoo.com/blogs/upshot/mcdonald-happy-meal-resists-decomposition-six-months.html
After reading the above article about how a McDonalds' hamburger takes longer than six months to decompose I have decided that there will be no more of the occasional indulging in the Happy Meal ! We may do it once every six months I guess the nostalgia of McDonalds makes me feel as if I should share with my own kids. Despite seeing Super Size and knowing that it is all just clever marketing I still have a mental association of happy with the golden arches ! Great example when the twins came back after being in Morocco for almost three years one of the only English words that they knew was McDonalds where they had dinner at the night before in the airport in Paris. So , in my attempt to make them blissfully happy and comfortable I took them at 3 a.m. when their jet lagged still on Moroccan time woke me up the first morning to the huge McDonalds in downtown Chicago. You would have thought that I took these kids five star dining ! The McDonalds in downtown Chi town has a vintage museum it is really a cool place if you can resit the urge to eat the food. It made them smile and since I could not communicate with them as a mother that smile was worth a million smackers !
Well now a days they tell me that it is bad for your body but if there is a cool toy then they want it !So I have already started thinking about back to school lunches I purchased 5 boxes of horizon milk today :) You know the little milk boxes it was $10 a case so I better stock up since I need 15 a week ! I also got a couple of packs of the honest kids juice pouches I am in love with this juice although it can be pricey . I was thinking about lunchables since Norah inquired if they were good for your body or not ! I said let us look and they are not that great for the body but considerably better than a happy meal. I said why oh why is there not a healthy happy meal that can be store bought with a toy ? I mean an even happier meal with hummus, carrots, a nice tuna sandwich, pizza , the possible combinations are endless. The meal could come with the same toy that is attempting to promote the latest movie or craze or it could come with something even cooler like a vintage style toy ! I just think kids need an even happier meal that is good for their bodies !
So I am cooking sahoor for the 3rd Day of Ramadan ! This is what I cooked Crepes stuffed with Kraft Light Cool Whip . I used the Farmhouse Crepe Mix which was super duper easy and then did a summer fruit garnish of strawberries and blueberries :) The crepes are just chillin until about 4 a.m. central time when we will begin our fast.
I got this image from http://www.surlatable.com/search/searchContainer.jsp?q=crepe%20mix&s=true
I actually got mine at Whole Foods :)
We broke our fast at Sundown with a rice dish called kabsah that is divine ! I was a guest at someone's home and since the Arabian granny speaks little English she was not giving away her secret.
Kabsah looks a little somethin like this. Arab women do not like to be photographed so I borrowed this image from a friend's Face Book page.

Ramadan Bliss
Ramadan Kareem,
Today is the first day of Ramadan when every Muslim around the world is obligated to fast from sun up to sun down. Vices such as smoking , gum chewing , and nail biting must also be refrained from. There is also no love making during the fast from sun up to sun down however many babies are born after nine months because it is human nature to jump each other bones once to sun is down ! There should be no gossip and Muslims should try to read the entire Quran during this month. Layat Al Qadir is a special day during the last ten days of Ramadan when Muslims go pray extra prayers all through the night in order to for special prayers to be answered. The month is extremely holy and people generally go to the Masjid and pray night prayers that last a couple of hours usually from 8 p.m. -10 p.m. , there is a great deal of
comradery during the month and special charity called zakat must be paid to the poor by those who can afford it ! In attention to this Ramadan is all about giving up food at the same exact time , so that all Muslims are humbled by hunger and thirst during this holy month. It is the spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood that is most significant in Ramadan. Children do not fast until they reach puberty , nor do the ill or elderly ! Pregnant and nursing women should not fast !
I am exhausted I woke up before sunset and cooked the morning meal which was a simple dish of fava beans , bread , and kefir :) We also had a glass of cold iced Chai
Oregon Chai yum yum !
Then I went to Whole Foods to shop for the Moroccan Lentil Soup Harira, which I like to use fresh organic vegetables and spice whenever possible. You can also make the vegan version by not adding meat which is just as delicious and flavorful as the meat version.
The fast is broken with a cup of Cafe O' lait , also pictured below , I use of handheld bodium frother to make the top nice and foamy. I am from the South so I prefer to add a bit of my own tradition to the holiday by using Cafe Du Monde French Roast Coffee and I can very often be caught making beignets during Ramadan as well ! Ramadan can make one real fat if they are not real careful and indulging while allowed is not the true spirit of the month.

The Soup Yum Yum
The Cafe O' Lait
Moroccan Harira
The recipe below will serve 6 to 8 people, and follows the pressure cooker method. To adapt cooking times for traditional simmering in a stockpot, read the Tips at the bottom of the page.
Prep Time: 40 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour, 30 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours, 10 minutes
Ingredients:
½ lb. uncooked meat (lamb, beef or chicken), chopped into 1/2” pieces
several soup bones (optional)
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 bunch cilantro (coriander), finely chopped to yield about 1/4 cup
1 bunch parsley, finely chopped to yield about 1/4 cup
1 or 2 celery stalks with leaves, finely chopped
1 large onion, grated
1 handful of dry chick peas, soaked and then peeled
1 tablespoon smen (optional)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 1/2 teaspoons pepper
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon turmeric or ¼ teaspoon yellow colorant
6 large tomatoes (about 2 lb. or 1 kg), peeled, seeded and pureed
2 to 3 tbsp dry lentils, picked over and washed
3 tablespoons tomato paste, mixed evenly into 1 or 2 cups of water
2 to 3 tablespoons uncooked rice OR uncooked broken vermicelli
1 cup flour
Preparation:
Step 1 - Ahead of Time
Make sure you have all the ingredients. Do the following before you begin cooking the soup.
Soak and skin the chickpeas. (You might want to soak them the night before you cook.)
Pick through the lentils and wash them.
Peel, seed and puree the tomatoes in a blender or food processor. Or, stew the tomatoes and pass them through a food mill to remove the seeds and skin.
Pick the parsley and cilantro leaves from their stems. Small pieces of stem are OK, but discard long, thick pieces with no leaves. Wash the herbs, drain well, and finely chop them by hand or with a food processor.
semble the remaining ingredients and follow the steps below.
Step 2 - Brown the Meat
Put the meat, soup bones and oil into a 6-qt. or larger pressure cooker. Over medium heat, cook the meat for a few minutes, stirring to brown all sides.
Step 3 - Make the Stock
Add the cilantro, parsley, celery, onion, chick peas, tomatoes, smen and spices. Stir in 3 cups of water.
Cover tightly, and heat over high heat until pressure is achieved. Reduce the heat to medium, and cook for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and release the pressure.
Step 4 – Make the Soup
Add the lentils, tomato paste mixture, and 2 quarts (or about 2 liters) of water to the stock.
Set aside (but don’t add yet), either the rice
Last Step
While the soup is cooking, mix together the 1 cup of flour with 2 cups of water. Set the mixture aside, and stir or whisk it occasionally. The flour will eventually blend with the water. If the mixture is not smooth when you're ready to use it, pass it through a sieve to remove balls.
Once the rice (or vermicelli) has cooked, taste the soup for seasoning. Add salt or pepper if desired.
Bring the soup to a full simmer. Slowly — and in a thin stream — pour in the flour mixture. Stir constantly and keep the soup simmering so the flour doesn’t stick to the bottom.
You will notice the soup beginning to thicken when you've used approximately half the flour mixture. How thick to make harira is your own preference. I like to thicken the broth so that it achieves a cream-like consistency.
Simmer the thickened soup, stirring occasionally, for five to ten minutes to cook off the taste of the flour. Remove the soup from the heat.
Serves 6 to 8.
I found a very simple recipe and this the one I often use when I am not winging it with a Moroccan mama's special recipe for her baby boy ! The recipes vary from Moroccan family to Moroccan family and virtually every region of Morocco has a different take on this Ramadan classic. I also serve it with fresh baked Moroccan bread :) which I will be brave and post another day. Now for the evening meal after ifthar (breakfast) , I made a lasanga and a green salad as if more food was really needed ! See y'all tomorrow when I post another great feast from the 30 days of Ramadan :) Bliss Bliss xoxoxo Jen
